Wine of the Week – 2008 Castello di Bossi Corbaia Toscana IGT

 

 

Each week I pick out one wine to highlight as my wine of the week.  This wine may be an outstanding wine, a great value or just something very interesting.

Overview

Like a lot of people, I love Italian wines.  The so called “Super Tuscan” wines are near the top of my list when it comes to the wines of Italy.  A “Super Tuscan” is simply put, is a wine from Tuscany that uses non-traditional grapes.  By non-traditional, they mean grapes not indigenous to Italy.  This list of non-traditional grapes includes Merlot, Syrah and a multitude of others including in this case, Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

The local wine store brought this wine in several months ago and it immediately caught my eye.  When they put it on sale, I had to grab a few bottles.  The release price of this wine is $65, which makes my under $50 price look even better.

 

I see the wine is available at several web based wine stores around the country.  One store even shows it available for only $45.  Most stores list it at $55 to $65.  A complete list is available via Wine Searcher by clicking here.

 

 

The Winery

The Castello di Bossi winery is the perfect union between innovation and tradition.

 

It consists of six large separate work-areas, each with separate temperature controls.  Despite its size and its up-to-date facilities, it is below ground on two sides and almost invisible.  The fermentation area has new temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

 

A timing program automatically controls pump-overs; the must breaks up the cap of skins by gravity flow, aided by a system of plates and chains inside the tank.

 

Following the alcoholic fermentation and after finishing a 20-22-day post-fermentation maceration on the skins, the wine goes unfiltered directly to barrel.  There, the malic acid will be converted and they will mature for about 2 years in the barrel cellar that holds over 1,000 light-toast French oak barrels from the Allier forest.  After this lengthy maturation, the wines are bottle-aged for 12 months at temperatures between 13 and18 C.  Correct temperatures are crucial for us, in that the wines do not undergo filtration.

2008 Castello di Bossi Corbaia Toscana IGT – $47.49

This “Super Tuscan” is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.  The grapes for this wine are hand harvested from 35 year old vines.  After a 38 day maceration and fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months in Barrique.  After bottling, the wine receives an additional 12 months of bottle aging before it is released.

 

The wine has 14.5% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a dark ruby red color.  The stunning nose has black cherries, cassis, crushed stone minerals, leather, eucalyptus, roasted herbs, smoke, earthy underbrush and dried flowers.  This has a medium to full body with moderate to solid tannins and very good acidity.  On the palate waves of fruit roll in but are quickly pushed aside by eucalyptus, minerals and roasted herbs.  The finish is extremely long with some earthiness and a floral note joining the party in your mouth.  This is on the young side but is perfect with a juicy steak to help balance out the big tannins.  Enjoy this one over the next decade or two.  (95 pts)

Overview

I joined the Bedrock mailing list just about as soon as it was created.  Besides making several outstanding wines using grapes from some of the oldest vineyards in the region, they also produce some of the best wines currently coming out of California.

 

The Winery

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson in a 550 square-foot, former chicken coop with 8 foot ceilings and no fermentation space.  After six years of Bedrock being a one-man-show, Morgan was able to talk his best friend, Chris Cottrell, into moving to California from New York to join him.  They now happily have a little more space to move around in but share the same objectives that guided the winery at the start.

 

The winery’s objectives are:

 

To channel the fruit of ancient vines into powerful, elegant, and distinctly Californian wines.

To spread the gospel of Syrah in California by sourcing fruit from great terroirs throughout the North Coast.

To proclaim the greatness of Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon by sparing no expense on wines of uniqueness and personality.

To reclaim rose’ from the excesses of saignee and focus on precision, delicacy, aromatics, and food friendliness.

To make fascinating and quixotic white wines from unique sites and interesting varietals.

To dream big but keep production low!

 

 

Monte Rosso Vineyard

The Vineyard

Monte Rosso, nestled on the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, near the town of Agua Caliente, was originally planted by the Emanuel Goldstein in the early 1880s.  The vineyard fell victim to phylloxera and was replanted in 1890.  Some of his original plantings (Zin, Semillon) still remain.  Louis Martini purchased the property in 1938 and replanted some of the ranch with what is today some of the oldest cabernet sauvignon in the North America.  Martini renamed the vineyard “Monte Rosso” for its mountaintop setting and bright red, volcanic soils.

 

 

 

2010 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard – $38.00

The grapes for this wine actually come from the exact block Morgan’s father, Joel Peterson, used to create his Ravenswood Monte Rosso Zinfandel many years ago.

This wine has 15.0% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a deep purple color.  The stunning nose is full of brambly berries, minerals, violets, fresh ground black pepper, toasty oak, vanilla, melted licorice, freshly ground dark roast coffee, and a touch of dark bittersweet chocolate.  This full bodied gem has moderate to solid tannins and very nice acidity.  On the palate, layers of fruit, spice, and savory elements take turns engulfing the taste buds, trying to out do each other.  The finish is extremely long and again reveals new layers every few seconds.  This is obviously on the young side and even though it will last in the cellar through the end of the decade, it is absolutely stunning right now.  (95 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2009 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina

Overview

I saw this wine sitting on the local wine store’s shelf for a few weeks.  There were several time I almost grabbed a bottle but for some reason purchased other wines.  One day I saw the store had the wine on sale and finally just pulled the trigger and grabbed a bottle.  I just had to wait for a nice day to grill up a steak and enjoy the wine on the deck.  That day has finally arrived.

 

The current vintage of this wine, the 2011, has a suggested retail price of $55.  The 2009 vintage which is covered in this post is available direct from the winery’s “Wine Library” for $65.  I don’t know how much of this vintage is still on store’s shelves, but obviously at least one store was still selling it in April.  I see the wine is available from at least a few internet based stores for around the original release price.

The Winery

In 1979, William and Mary Seavey purchased the historic estate originally founded by the Franco-Swiss Farming Company in 1881.  One century after the first vines were planted, Seavey Vineyard was established.  Once again, the land would be groomed to grow world-class wines, not to satisfy modern trends, but to honor age-old winemaking traditions.  The Seavey Vineyard Wine Library maintains wine from each vintage produced on this land and provides close friends of the winery a chance to taste back through twenty years of Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

In 1989, the Seaveys renovated the original 1881 stone dairy barn as their winery and tasting room.  In 1990 they made their inaugural vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay under the Seavey Vineyard label.  They added Merlot in 1994 and their second Cabernet label, Caravina, in 1999.  The success of their early vintages encouraged them to expand production, especially of Cabernet Sauvignon, requiring construction of a second winery building in 2000.

 

In 2003, the Seaveys installed one of the first solar energy systems used by a Napa Valley winery.  The project eliminates 24,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Seavey Vineyard

 

 

2009 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina – $39.99

This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged in 100% French oak, 50% of which were new.  This was the winery’s 11th release of their second Cabernet Sauvignon.  Seavey produces the wine with the intent to provide an accessible, yet very cellarable, Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

This wine has 14.9% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a deep, dark ruby red color.  The stunning nose has cassis, black cherry, mint, licorice, smoldering wood embers, baking spices, tobacco, dark roast coffee and a touch of dark chocolate.  This has medium to full body with moderate to solid tannins and very nice acidity.  Nice fruit and spice jump out first on the palate with mint and minerals coming in quickly.  On the fairly long finish dark roast coffee and dark chocolate make an appearance.  This is on the young side but already tastes very good with some air.  (93 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2012 Loring Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Overview

I’ve been a big fan of Brian Loring’s single vineyard Pinot Noir wine for several years.  When they started producing “appellation branded” Pinots, I was once again a big fan.  When the winery started producing other wines with Cabernet and traditional Rhone grapes, I again jumped in with both feet.

 

Brian’s wines are not made to sit in the cellar for a decade, they are made to enjoy now.  I should add, I prefer the wines with a couple years of cellar time, but it really isn’t required.

 

The Winery

Why I Make Pinot Noir

My name is Brian Loring and my obsession is Pinot Noir. OK, I’m also pretty crazy about Champagne, but that’s another story. While in college, I worked at a wine shop in Hollywood (Victor’s), where one of the owners was a Burgundy fanatic. So, my very first experiences with Pinot Noir were from producers like Domaine Dujac, Henri Jayer, and DRC. Needless to say, I found subsequent tasting safaris into the domestic Pinot Noir jungle less than satisfying. It wasn’t until I literally stumbled into Calera (I tripped over a case of their wine in the store room) that I found a California Pinot Noir that I could love. But it would be quite a while before I found someone else that lived up to the standard that Josh Jensen had established. I eventually came to understand and enjoy Pinots from Williams Selyem, Chalone, and Sanford, but I really got excited about California Pinot Noir when I met Norm Beko from Cottonwood Canyon at an Orange County Wine Society tasting.

 

I’d made about 3 trips around the booths at the tasting without finding a single good Pinot Noir. So, being the open minded person that I am (remember I passed him up 3 times), I stopped at the Cottonwood booth. I was BLOWN away by Norm’s 1990 Santa Maria Pinot Noir. After a few years of attending every Cottonwood event and asking Norm 10,000 questions about winemaking, he offered to let come learn the process during the ’97 crush. I checked sugar levels, picked, crushed, punched down, pressed, filled barrels, and generally moved a bunch of stuff around with fork lifts and pallet jacks! It was the time of my life… I was totally hooked. And even though I hadn’t planned it, I ended up making two barrels of Pinot Noir. That was the start of the Loring Wine Company. What had started out as a dream 15 years earlier was now a reality – I was a winemaker!

 

How I Make Pinot Noir

My philosophy on making wine is that the fruit is EVERYTHING. What happens in the vineyard determines the quality of the wine – I can’t make it better – I can only screw it up! That’s why I’m extremely picky when choosing vineyards to buy grapes from. Not only am I looking for the right soil, micro-climate, and clones, I’m also looking for a grower with the same passion and dedication to producing great wine that I have. In other words, a total Pinot Freak! My part in the vineyard equation is to throw heaping piles of money at the vineyard owners (so that they can limit yields and still make a profit) and then stay out of the way! Since most, if not all of the growers keep some fruit to make their own wine, I tell them to farm my acre(s) the same way they do theirs – since they’ll obviously be doing whatever is necessary to get the best possible fruit. One of the most important decisions made in the vineyard is when to pick. Some people go by the numbers (brix, pH, TA, etc) and some go by taste. Once again, I trust the decision to the vineyard people. The day they pick the fruit for their wine is the day I’m there with a truck to pick mine. Given this approach, the wine that I produce is as much a reflection of the vineyard owner as it is of my winemaking skills. I figure that I’m extending the concept of terroir a bit to include the vineyard owner/manager… but it seems to make sense to me. The added benefit is that I’ll be producing a wide variety of Pinots. It’d be boring if everything I made tasted the same.

 

About the Name

Sounds pretty straight forward, last name Loring, therefore Loring Wine Company. Ahhh, but what about the “Wine Company” part? That is an hommage to Josh Jensen at Calera… which is actually Calera Wine Company. Since he was the guy who showed me that great Pinot Noir could be made in California, I decided to name my winery Loring Wine Company to “honor” him. Hopefully, Josh sees it for what it is and doesn’t want to sue me for trademark infringement!

2012 Loring Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon Blend – $16.50

This wine is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Mourvedre from Paso Robles.  I bought this as a pre-release from the winery, so the price I paid is no longer available.

 

This wine has 14.9% alcohol and the bottle is sealed with a twist off cap.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a bright ruby red color.  The stunning nose has cassis, licorice, earthy underbrush, black cherries, dried herbs, cedar, stony minerals, tobacco, dark chocolate and dried flowers.  This has medium to full body, moderate ripe tannins and nice acidity.  On the palate, juicy berries and spicy oak jump out first with dried herbs, cherries and minerals coming in on the back end.  The finish has nice length with a nice earthy element and chocolate coming into the picture adding some complexity.  Not a wine made to stash in the cellar but to open and enjoy over the next couple of years.  A great value for under $20.  (90 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2011 Casey Flat Ranch Estate Red Wine

Overview

This was a new winery for me up to a couple weeks ago.  I participated in an online tasting of a few of their wines, one of which was the winery’s 2010 vintage of this wine.  Just a few days after the event, Wines Til Sold Out (WTSO.com) offered the newest vintage at a great price, so I grabbed four bottles.  I need to thank Charles Communications for introducing me to this winery

Vineyard

 

 

The Winery

Casey Flat Ranch a 5,000 acre ranch, is based in the Capay Valley AVA, bordering the Vaca Mountains on the eastern side of Napa County (22 miles due east of St. Helena).  The ranch is about 90 minutes north of San Francisco.  The family has owned the ranch for 30 years.  The vineyard is defined by its award-winning Rhone and Bordeaux-style blends, stunningly rugged location, the purebred Longhorn cattle that roam the estate, and a rich homesteading heritage that dates back to California’s Gold Rush era.  With its unique history and stunning high-elevation mountain vineyards, Casey Flat Ranch produces deep, concentrated wines that evoke the raw natural beauty of the land, aided by the earnest, discriminating and pioneering team behind each bottle.

 

The first vines were planted in 2004 and the vineyard is sustainably cultivated, using materials and farming techniques that emphasize water and soil conservation.  The growing season brings warm days and cool nights, creating climate conditions similar to the St. Helena appellation, just 22 miles to the West.

 

In addition to the vineyards, the family has maintained a Longhorn Cattle operation on the property for 11 years.  Current estimates have the herd numbering between 140 and 170 head, with 30 to 40 heifers as annual replacement.  Registered Bulls, purchased out of Texas from the Bass Brothers Ranch have been used as the basis for the line breeding program.

2011 Casey Flat Ranch Estate – SRP $35

This vintage is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah, 16% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 1% Viognier.  The wine has a release price of $35 and is worth the price of admission.

 

“Each CFR block is farmed, harvested and made as a unique wine specific to that soil, varietal, clone and microclimate. It is not until almost two years later that we blend these blocks together to craft the CFR Estate Red Wine. Only the very best of CFR goes into the blend.”  Laura Barrett, Winemaker

 

This wine has 14.3% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a deep purple color.  The very open and inviting nose has blackberries, dried herbs, minerals, blueberries, vanilla, fresh ground espresso, eucalyptus, Asian spices, plums and a touch of cedar.  This has a medium body with moderate to solid tannins and good acidity.  Spicy berries and minerals grab the palate initially, slowly allowing espresso beans, vanilla and dried herbs to join the party.  The finish has very good length with a touch of eucalyptus adding some complexity.  Even though this is very young and opened nicely with an hour of air, I think it will be even better down the road.  (94 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2012 Sojourn Pinot Noir Rodgers Creek Vineyard

Overview

This wine was from my first purchase from Underground Cellar.  If you’re not familiar with them, I recommend checking them out.  The unique feature of the company can be summed up in two words, “free upgrade”.  In this case I ordered 6 bottles of the generic 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.  After subtracting a credit on my account, my final price was only $28.17 a bottle.  After completing the purchase I was notified five of my six bottles were upgraded to the winery’s single vineyard offerings.  Three of the upgraded wines were this one and the two others were upgraded to the Sangiacomo Vineyard wine.  If you aren’t familiar with the winery and their wines, I should point out the single vineyard wines are usually considerably more expensive.  On Cellar Tracker, this wine has a community average cost of close to $50.

The Winery

Sojourn Cellars began in 2001 as a collaboration between two tennis buddies who discovered a mutual passion for great wine and the things that tend to go with it – good food and good company.  Utilizing Erich’s experience as an Assistant Winemaker at Arrowood Winery, Craig Haserot and Erich Bradley developed a plan to produce distinctive Pinot noir wines complemented by small bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon from extraordinary vineyard sources.  Over the next 10 years, they worked together to develop their shared love of fine wine into a winery that has established a consistent track record of producing highly rated wines under the Sojourn brand.  Today, what began as their own personal journey into the world of winemaking has evolved into a first-class boutique winery committed to creating high-quality artisan wines for people who know and appreciate them.

2012 Sojourn Pinot Noir Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast – SRP $48

Rodgers Creek Vineyard sits high on a ridge in the heart of the cool Petaluma Gap.  The vineyard takes the brunt of the wind and thick fog that define this cool climate zone.  The vines are grown in light, chalky soils on steep inclines.  Two blocks of the Pommard Pinot Noir clone form the foundation of this wine, 15% of which was fermented whole-cluster, contributing verve and depth.  Clone 777 is blended in, adding a layer of bright red fruit to rich spices and dark cherry flavors.

 

After open-top fermentation using native yeast, this 100% Pinot Noir was aged in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new.  The wine was bottles unfined and unfiltered in September 2013.

 

This wine has 14.2% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.  There were 725 cases produced.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a bright cherry red to ruby color.  The spellbinding nose has cherries, warm baking spices, strawberries, minerals, white pepper, dried flowers and a touch of earthy underbrush.  This is barely medium body with silky tannins and very good acidity.  On the palate the spices and cherries jump out first with minerals and strawberries coming in on the back end.  The finish has outstanding length with white pepper and some earthiness entering the picture.  This is extremely young but already outstanding.  This is perfectly balanced and carries no excess weight.  With a lot of upside potential, this could be mythical in a few years.  Load up if you can find this and can afford a big purchase.  (94 pts)

 Overview

I guess you can call this a Social Media relationship.  I learned of Jean Edwards Cellars via Twitter.  I read their Tweets and started following them, luckily they followed me back.  Over the last couple of years we have exchanged jokes and Tweets about just about everything.  I was finally able to order a few bottles of their wine, and after giving a bottle a good 15 minutes to recover from the trip half way across the country, I popped the cork.  I am now a big fan and I spread their name to anyone who will listen to me.  I highly encourage you to check out their website and join their mailing list.  These are two very nice people making some of the best wine in the Napa Valley.

 

 

Name

 

 

The Winery

The owners of Jean Edwards Cellars are John and Karen Troisi.  Karen and John used their middle names when determining what to name their winery.  The couple is a bi-coastal family, retaining their home in New Jersey but also setting up a west coast residence in California’s wine country.  When they are in New Jersey, the third member of their team, Kian Tavakoli, their consulting winemaker handles the day to day duties.  Jean Edwards uses the custom crush facilities at the Michael Mondavi Family Winery.

We are the owner/vintners of Jean Edwards Cellars – we share a passion for wine, a similar palate and a singular vision on the style of wines we produce.  We live by our motto that “you should only make wines you love to drink” and focus our production on artisan red wines that are full-bodied and classically styled.

 

Quality and heritage are important to us – our wines are reflective of their origins and are sourced some of the most prestigious vineyards (and vineyard blocks) throughout Napa Valley including Stagecoach Vineyard (on Pritchard Hill); vineyards on the valley floor in Rutherford, Oakville and Coombsville; and mountain vineyards on Howell and Spring Mountain.

 

Time really flies – we started producing commercial wines in 2004 but our dream of producing high quality Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon wines started much earlier when we traveled to the valley in 1985.  During that trip, we developed a true appreciation for cabernet sauvignon wines and decided we would some day be a part of the business and produce a wine called Jean Edwards Cellars (our two middle names).  It was a goal worth waiting for and twenty plus years later we released our first wine in the Spring of 2006.

2011 Jean Edwards Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley – SRP $65

This is a new wine for the winery.  It is sourced from a well-known vineyard on the eastern hillsides of St. Helena (just below Howell Mountain).  According to the winery, “We wish we could share the vineyard name with you, but contractually we can’t”.  This wine has 12% Merlot blended in with the Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

This has 14.2% alcohol by volume and is sealed with a natural cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a medium to deep ruby red color.  The very inviting nose has cassis, stony minerals, mint, black cherries, cedar, tobacco, baking spices and violets.  This has medium body, moderate tannins and very good acidity.  On the palate the rich cassis and spice jump out first with cedar, minerals and mint coming in later.  The finish has very good length with the fruit and mint seeming to linger forever.  For such a young wine, this already tastes very good.  Down the road this could turn into something very special.  (94 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2012 Sandler Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard

Overview

This wine was offered in honor of the Wineberserkers website’s 5th anniversary on Monday, January 27th.  That was the day of the Wine Berserker’s annual BerserkerDay.  During that day dozens of offers are released one by one directly to the members of the forum.

 

In this case the offer was a 4 pack of different single vineyard Sandler Pinot Noirs.  The regular price for the four wines was $152, the special price was $100 with shipping included.  It was a killer offer, so I grabbed 2 packages.  Besides this wine the other three offered were from the Peterson Vineyard, Boer Vineyard and Keefer Ranch.

 

 

The Winery

Sandler wines are produced in San Francisco by owner and winemaker, Ed Kurtzman.  Ed’s journey into winemaking began quite by accident, when he took a job at a wine shop during his undergrad studies at UMass Amherst.  It wasn’t long before Ed realized that wine was more than a passing fancy.  He jettisoned his original career plans, moved to California to sell wine, and soon enrolled in the enology program at Fresno State.  After graduating, Ed embarked on an early career that included stints at a who’s who of central coast wineries.  He started out in the cellar at Bernardus, under the tutelage of Don Blackburn and Kirby Anderson.  Next, he spent three harvests as assistant winemaker to Michael Michaud at Chalone before taking the reins as head winemaker for Rob and Diana Jensen’s Testarossa Winery in Los Gatos.  It was at Testarossa that Ed’s deft touch with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay started to gain widespread attention.  Before long, he found himself in demand as a consulting winemaker, taking on clients including Fort Ross, Freeman, Roar and Mansfield-Dunne while becoming a partner in August West.

 

In 2003, Ed launched his own label, the Sandler Wine Company, devoted to small bottlings of Pinot Noir, Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache, from his favorite vineyard and grower sources.

2012 Sandler Wine Company Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard- $25.00

The vintage according to Ed Kurtzman –

2012 was one of those rare years when perfect spring, summer and fall weather gave the vineyards a healthy crop of high quality and quantity.  The last time I saw a year like this was 1997 when I was at Chalone, a long time ago.  The 2012 Pinots are already drinking well, and don’t appear to be going into shutdown mode like the 2007s and 2009s did six months after bottling.

 

This 100% Pinot Noir has 13.5% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with an agglomerated cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a bright ruby red color.  The enticing nose has black cherries, baking spices, strawberries, earthy underbrush, tomato leaf, dusty minerals and wild flowers.  This has medium body with soft to moderate silky tannins and good acidity.  On the palate the bright red fruit and spice grab hold initially, slowly allowing minerals and a touch of earthiness to slip in on the back end.  The finish has a nice mix of the savory and fruity elements with just a slight but pleasing herbal note coming in late.  This is on the young side and will improve with some cellar time but that doesn’t stop it from being delicious today.  (92 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2010 Ehlers Estate Cabernet Franc St. Helena

Overview

I’ve been a big fan of Cabernet Franc based wines for many years.  Unfortunately there just aren’t that many wines out there at decent prices with good availability other than ones from the Loire Valley.  I like a nice Loire Cab Franc, but they at times get a touch too “green” for my tastes.  Usually I have to settle for a blend with some Cab Franc in the mix.

 

This wine is a great exception.  The price exceeds most people’s (including mine) budget for a week night wine, even a week end wine, but a splurge every once in a while is not a bad thing.  There were 577 cases of the wine produced, so it is available, but it could take some work or a Google search to find it.  Luckily for me, I was able to grab a few bottles from a local store when it was on sale.

 

 

The Winery

Ehlers Estate 100% Organic Vineyard and Viticulture Profile

History: The Ehlers Estate vineyard is located on an historic winegrowing site in the northern part of Napa Valley’s acclaimed St. Helena appellation.  Grapes have been cultivated on this coveted site since the mid-1800s.  The vineyard was replanted using a diversity of clone and rootstock selections under the guidance of renowned enologist Jacques Boissenot in 1995.  Today, the Ehlers Estate vineyard, which is the source of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc, is farmed with strict adherence to organic and biodynamic farming standards.

2010 Ehlers Estate Cabernet Franc St. Helena – $39.99

The local wine store put this on sale for a killer price a couple weeks ago, so I had to reduce their inventory by a few bottles.  I am a big fan of Cabernet Franc based wines and there are very few with a high enough percentage of the grape to be labeled with the varietal.

 

This wine has 14.5% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.  This is 100% Cabernet Franc from 100% CCOF certified organic, 100% Demeter Certified Biodynamic estate vineyards.  The wine was aged in 100% French oak, 50% new.  There were 597 cases of wine produced.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a deep maroon color.  The stunning nose has blackberries, cassis, dusty minerals, dried herbs, tobacco, violets, cedar, underbrush and baking spices.  This has medium to full body, moderate to solid tannins and very good acidity.  On the palate fruit, minerals and spices jump out first with a floral note and subtle earthiness coming in later.  The finish has very good length with a touch of cedar joining the nice lingering fruit.  This is on the young side but already showing very well.  I look forward to following the wine’s evolution over the next decade.  (94 pts)

Wine of the Week – 2007 Core Ground Around

 

 

Each week I pick out one wine to highlight as my wine of the week.  This wine may be an outstanding wine, a great value or just something very interesting.

Overview

Core is quickly becoming one of my “go to” wineries when I want something a little different.  Dave Corey is making several straight varietal wines that are outstanding, but he shines with his blends, like this one.  Most of these blends are along the standard lines like Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, but they also make unique and distinctive blends.  This wine is a blend of predominantly Tempranillo with Grenache and Syrah.  Even the Tempranillo isn’t from one single vineyard; it comes from two separate vineyards, Santa Barbara Highlands and Laetitia Vineyards.

 

 

The Winery

Dave Corey’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Biology from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in Entomology and Plant Physiology from Kansas State University, which was completed in 1995. Prior to ntering the wine industry in 1996 , Dave worked in Salinas and the Central Valley in agricultural fields including cole crops, cotton, almonds, citrus, walnuts, kiwi, table grapes, apples and stone fruit. His first position in the wine industry was as a Pest Control Advisor with Cambria Winery and Vineyards and later at Kendall-Jackson Vineyards of Santa Barbara County.

 

Dave left Kendall Jackson Vineyards in 1999 to begin Vital Vines, a viticultural company providing technical support for vineyard property owners, vineyard managers and winemaking personnel in the promotion of sustainable agriculture. He has worked with clients that include Laetitia, Barnwood, Beckman, Melville, Stolpman, Gainey, Zaca Mesa, Sea Smoke, Le Bon Climat, Sine Qua Non, Rideau, Carhartt, Rusack, Westerly, Fiddlestix, Vogelzang, Andrew Murray, Evergreen,

Arita Hills and Royal Oaks.

 

With a major commitment and a second mortgage, Dave gradually decreased his vineyard consulting work to focus on vineyard sourcing, winemaking duties and winery direct sales for CORE wine company which he started in 2001 with his wife, Becky. Dave passionately continues working in the same capacity today in addition to several new wine projects with family members. He can also be found pouring wine for customers at the CORE wine company tasting room in Old

Orcutt, California.

Vineyard

 

 

2007 Core Ground Around – $20.59

This is a blend of 41% Tempranillo from Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, 23% Tempranillo from Laetitia Vineyard, 18% Grenache from Alta Mesa Vineyard and 18% Syrah from Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard.  I was able to buy a few bottles of this wine at a greatly discounted price, so there may be deals out there if you dig hard enough.

 

This wine has 14.9% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork.

 

My Tasting Note

The wine is a deep garnet color.  The inviting nose has blackberries, dried cherries, dusty minerals, warm baking spices, licorice, dried herbs, fresh ground espresso, eucalyptus, and some subtle earthiness.  This has medium to full body, fairly solid tannins, and tart acidity.  On the palate nice blackberry and cherry supply good sweetness up front with the minerals, spice, licorice and coffee coming in later, adding depth and complexity.  The finish is fairly long with the fruit and spice carrying the load with the eucalyptus making a nice closing appearance.  This is still on the young side but is coming around very nicely.  (91 pts)
